Rhinoplasty can be performed with either an open or closed technique. An open technique requires a tiny incision at the base of the nose. A closed technique only uses internal incisions and leaves no visible scarring. During rhinoplasty, the skin of the nose is lifted while the underlying bone and cartilage structure is sculpted to the desired shape. Excess cartilage may be removed and the tip of the nose may also be sculpted. Rhinoplasty generally requires two to three hours of surgery.
